Types of Rock Crushers and How to find the Right One for the Job ?

Be it mining operations, industrial operations, residential and commercial operations or any government infrastructure-related operations, Crushing is an integral part of the construction process. Crushing is generally done to reduce the big rocks and stones into aggregates and m-sand which will be used for various infrastructure activates. Crushers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and types to depending on the application, size reduction, feed and output sizes and capacity of the product required.

There are mainly 3 types of crushers:

Primary Crushers

Primary crushers are used at initial stage of crushing in the mining process. They are used to crush large rock into smaller pieces so that they can be sent for a secondary rock crushing process. Primary rock crushers include rock crushers that do heavy duty crushing like jaw crushers and gyratory crushers etc.

Secondary Crushers

Secondary rock crushing is implied right after the primary rock crushing. In secondary rock crushing, rocks are further crushed into smaller pieces. If any further size reduction is required, the material is passed to tertiary stage. Secondary rock crushers are generally cone crushers, secondary jaw crushers etc.

Tertiary Crushers

Tertiary crushing is often considered the final stage of crushing where in the aggregates are further crushed to produce cubical aggregates and m-sand .Tertiary rock crushers include crushers like vertical shat impactors, grinders, horizontal shaft impactors etc.

The major types of crushers available in the market are:

Jaw Crusher

Jaw crushers are usually used in the primary rock crushing process. Jaw crushers use extreme compressive force to break a large rock into smaller pieces. They are used to break down the biggest and heaviest rocks because they are known for their higher capacity output.

Cone Crusher

Cone crushers are usually used in secondary stage. Cone crushers use a rotating cone against the rocks to break them into smaller pieces by applying force on a singular point.

Vertical Shaft Impactor

Vertical shaft grinders are usually used in tertiary stage of rock crushing. It uses a high speed rotor with wear resistant tips and a crushing chamber designed to ‘throw’ the rock against it. The VSI crushers utilize velocity rather than surface force as the predominant force to break rock.

The type of rock crusher you need will depend on a lot of factors:

  • The type of material that needs to be crushed
  • The output size and quality of  the required product material
  • Capacity of the plant and tonnage of the products required.
  • The end application of the finished product.
  • Whether you are looking for stationary, skid or mobile plant
  • The number of stages in crushing.
